Idina Menzel was born Idina Kim Mentzel on the 30th of May 1971 in Queens, New York. She was raised in Syossett, New York and attended the Tisch School of the Arts of the University of New York, where she earned her drama degree. At the age of 15, she earned her living as a wedding singer.
Idina Menzel’s first debut performance was in the Broadway production of Rent in 1986. She was an original cast and played the part of Maureen Johnson. For playing Maureen, she was nominated as Best Feature Actress in a Musical by the Tony Awards.
After the success of Rent, Idina Menzel was next seen in the Goodspeed Opera House production of Summer of ’42. This was followed by the New York City Center Encores production of Hair and the Broadway production of Aida. Then Idina was seen in The Wild Party, for which she was nominated for Drama Desk Award. She was also hailed for her performance in The Vagina Monologues.
In 2003, Idina Menzel appeared in the Broadway production of Wicked, by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwarts. The musical was based on the novel by Gregory Maguire and she appeared alongside Kristin Chenoweth. For her performance, she was awarded the Best Leading Actress in a Musical in the 2004 Tony Awards.
Idina Menzel played the role of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba. In 2006, she reprised her role in Wicked at eh Apollo Victoria Theatre in London. more...
